The authorities of Brčko District need to accelerate administrative procedures to maintain the pace of project implementation and sustain effective cooperation with international partners, said the Principal Deputy High Representative and Brčko Supervisor Jonathan Mennuti during his visit to Brčko today, accompanied by the Head of the EBRD Office in BiH, Manuela Naessl. Mennuti and Naessl met with the Government of Brčko District to discuss ongoing infrastructure initiatives and the urgent steps needed to reduce delays and ensure progress in infrastructure projects.
The main topic of discussion was the issuance of building permits and other administrative procedures critical to the successful completion of the Brčko Port modernization project. This project is of great significance not only for Brčko but also for the entire country. Government members responsible for these procedures committed during discussions with the supervisor and Ms. Naessl to resolve outstanding issues promptly.
In addition, the meeting addressed the potential and prospects for Brčko regarding initiatives for the use of renewable energy sources and the improvement of electricity distribution, aiming to further move the District towards long-term energy sustainability in the future. It was emphasized that rapid decision-making in these areas is crucial for the continuation of successful cooperation with international partners and the acceleration of the sustainable transition in the energy sector.
In a separate meeting with representatives of the executive and legislative authorities, Supervisor Mennuti further discussed concerning delays and challenges related to the implementation of governance reforms, investment initiatives, responsible budget planning, and the fight against corruption.
It should be recalled that just over a year ago, the government in the District changed, and the mayor was dismissed with the explanation that this local community was not at a satisfactory level of development. Judging by the views of international officials, it seems that the new ruling group has managed to further deteriorate the situation. As our people would say: it can always get worse.
